In times of old, as well as modern days, Turquoise Squash Blossom Necklaces were/are worn as a symbol of one's status, wealth and cultural belonging by the Native American peoples.  In fact many of our indigenous Americans shun the American banking system in favor of pawn shops when they need cash.  "The wealth of the indigenous peoples of the Americas traditionally had to be portable, and jewelry was not just for decoration and embellishment; it was as much a wearable bank for the owner. It also depicted rank and social class within a tribe." (Excerpt IndianTraders.com)
