Rocio is the artist responsible for designing and making our Colornation Palomita Fringe Bag by Manos Zapotecas. She learned the art of textile dyeing and weaving from her mother. At age six she was tasked with preparing the wool for the loom and eventually took on more advanced parts of the process. At 13 she began weaving in earnest and dedicated herself to the family business whenever she wasn’t in school, designing, dying the wool, spinning and weaving the bodies.
Colornation Palomita was the third bag I stole from my shop. It takes three to begin a collection, right? My larger Paloma bags are great when I need to carry my school binder or laptop. This Palomita is my everyday bag, when I'm out and about in town, or going to a restaurant or shopping.
Colornation Palomita's striking turquoise diamond pattern floats on a rich, rust background. It's earthy, Southwest colors make such a splash, in any season. Dark brown, tan, pale gold and a garnet eye enrich this mid-sized bag with a wonderful artistry. It invites me into it's history, telling stories, and encouraging my imagination.
The weaving takes about 3 days for each bag. They're then washed before sewing a beautiful, black cotton lining into the interior, complete with a lined cell phone and smaller essentials pocket, zipper closure and an adjustable, leather cross-body strap. The top zipper has a little 'hand' pull, the symbol of Manos, that is this line's parent name; Manos Zapotecas. And did I mention the FRINGE? The copious brown leather fringe sides set this piece off and elevate it to absolutely COOL realms.
Says Rocio of her work, 'Weaving is a beautiful and noble work that allows me to care for my (2) kids but still fulfill my dream of being creative. It’s what I love to do,' she said.
This is fine craftsmanship at its best, in design and function, and a steal at this price!
